LOOPIN’ with Chris Mundorf - Vol 4

24 September 2009 No Comment

Hello everyone from the road!  Sorry it’s been so long since the last time I posted, but I had a life-changing experience about 4 months ago.  My wife and I had our first son, Evan Andrew.  What a ride!  As a lot of you know, my free time is at a minimum right now.

Back to the golf.  The last few weeks were a rollercoaster ride to say the least!  It all started with the Wyndham Championship where Troy came into the week at 117 on the FedEx Cup points list hoping to at least keep position to get into the Barclays the following week.  After making the cut on the number and then missing the saturday cut, he eeked in the field at 125.  Whew!

The Barclays.  What a venue!  I can’t believe the piece of land that Liberty National Golf Club is on!  What used to be an industrial landfill, is now a $500 million per membership golf club.  They spared no expense anywhere here.  The course was in as good of shape as one can be, but the layout left a little to be desired.  It wasn’t a bad course by any means, I just would find it hard to shell out that kind of money for anything less than top 10 in the world!  It was a course where you really had to have great control over your ball or you would make some ugly numbers.  Even if you hit good shots, you weren’t guaranteed a good result.  I think that the course would be a lot better if they softened some of the slopes and gave the player a few more bail out areas.  As of right now, there are NONE!

Troy played well in NJ and finished T20 which was good enough to move him to 83rd on the FedEx list and into the next tournament.  What’s funny is that coming down the stretch sunday, we were walking down the 17th fairway after making bogey on 16 wondering how far it dropped him in the standings.  When he was putting, I saw the leaderboard and it said he was projected 86 at that moment.  Walking off the green, I said to Troy, “hey, you’re 86 right now, don’t feel like you have to force anything on the next hole.”  To that he asked, “how long is this hole?”   I replied, “460.”  He said, “gimme the 2 iron.”  I liked the play since the wind was strong off the left blowing straight at the Statue of Liberty, not good for the driver that week!  It resulted in a rock solid par that sent us to Boston.

The Deutsche Bank Championship.  Again, a wonderful week in the northeast.  The first week we had any type of good weather for the whole week.  Picture perfect to be exact.

Overall, it was a good week, but now good enough to go any farther in the FedEx cup.  He had a chance, but a late bogey and not enough birdies on the par fives left him a little short of the top 70.  On the upside, it was his fifth made cut in a row, which is a pretty long streak for anyone not named Tiger on the tour.

The big story of the week for Troy wasn’t golf related at all.  He went top water Bluefin tuna fishing on tuesday and caught a 150 pounder.  He sent me the picture from his Iphone right after he caught it and I replied, “I haven’t seen you look that happy in a long time!”  Just joking of course!  What was great was that I was staying with my wife’s uncle who writes for the Boston Globe and he got an article written with the picture Troy sent me.  I couldn’t believe how many people yelled “nice fish” to Troy all week long!  I guess people still read the newspaper in Boston.

I’ve had the last 2.5 weeks off while the other tournaments are going on, which has been nice to get to know my son a little and play some golf in preparation for Q School at the end of October.  So, I’ll be writing you from Turning Stone Resort just east of Syracuse, NY where who knows what the weather will do.  Hopefully, the snow will hold off for us to get the golf in.  Talk to you soon!
