LOOPIN’ with Chris Mundorf - Vol 3
Hello everyone,
It’s been a few weeks since you’ve heard from me, so here’s the update.
We finished off the West Coast Swing at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. What a course! Even though the greens were poa annua, they were the most uniform ones I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, Troy didn’t have a good week on them and he missed the cut by one shot. Crazy enough, he birdied 18 (probably the hardest hole on the course) both days.
Instead of going to Mexico, the next week was used for getting his RV to Florida and get a lesson on his putting. He’s seeing the instructor that Zach Johnson and Vaughn Taylor use. We met back up in West Palm Beach for the Honda Classic.
The newly redesigned PGA National course is one to be reckoned with! When you throw 15 to 20 mph wind into the equation, you better have good control of your golf ball. 15 through 17 are as tough a stretch of holes as you will find anywhere. Again, the scores weren’t going in his favor, so he missed the cut again.
Off to Puerto Rico! Great weather and a golf course that was a lot better than I expected. I thought it would be a typical resort course, but it turned out to be a good test. It was a little tough judging the grain with the Paspalum grass that they use on the greens. It has a little broader leaf than bermuda, so it tends to have a more grain. Troy hit the ball really well, but his scores weren’t quite reflective of how he was playing. He hit a lot of good putts that burned the edge of the hole. At one point in the second round, he had the lead for a while, but a few bogeys finishing up left him in t-8th place. By the end of the week, the wind separated the field a little and Troy finished t-31.
We’re in Tampa now getting ready for the first round of the Transitions Championship. One of the best courses on the PGA Tour. A stern test of patience and ball striking. Hopefully, this will be a good week! Keep your fingers crossed.
Catch you later!
Chris
